When we don't do anything, we let the person who set up the decision environment decide for us - Dan Ariely

The example is from organ donation that looks at different countries in Europe. And in some countries, the participation rate is in the 90%, and in some, it's in the 20%. What's the difference between these countries? Do they educate people differently? Do they have different camaraderie, ideologies, religion, or whatever? The answer is, they have a different enrollment form. - Dan Ariely

In countries that have ‘opt in,’ you have to opt in to become one. Those countries have about a 20% participation rate. Countries that have an ‘opt out,’ and must sign to get out of it, they don't do anything and stay with it. - Dan Ariely

In many decisions, we don't know what to do. As decisions get bigger, we don't know what to do even more, and we just don't do anything. When we don't do anything, we let the person who set up the decision environment decide for us. - Dan Ariely

When I heard Dan tell this story on stage, I was spell bound.

As I've known for years, people don't make decisions based on rational data, logic.

We make them based on emotion, with a heavy dose of bias, colored by prior experience, up to and including what happened earlier in the day. And that's before we get to the design of the form.

Thrilled to welcome Dan Ariely to ‘Turn the Lens’, so we dig deeper into the how we make decisions, and why we do what we do, even when we know it's wrong (like eating too many sweets).

We started with his latest book 'Misbelief: What Makes Rational People Believe Irrational Things' but went way beyond that to human's desire to see patterns, create complex stories, the role of trust and resilience, our evolutional biology in which we're using a Swiss Army Knife to navigate the modern world, work life balance, and a whole lot more.

I could have got for 6 hours, here’s a packed 60 minutes.

Bucket List item checked. Thanks so much Dan for sharing your insights and perspectives.
